Indian Universities Shine in World University Rankings 2024: IISc Bangalore Leads the Way

In a recent revelation by Times Higher Education (THE) magazine, a renowned UK-based publication, Indian higher education institutions have shown remarkable progress in the World University Rankings for 2024. With a record-breaking 91 Indian universities making it to the list this year, India has secured its position as the fourth best-represented nation in these prestigious rankings. This marks a significant improvement from last year when only 75 Indian institutes were included in the rankings.

Indian Institute of Science Tops the Charts

Topping the charts once again, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), located in Bangalore, has been declared the best institute from India in the World University Rankings 2024. This achievement is particularly notable because IISc has returned to the global top 250 ranks for the first time since 2017, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

Other Leading Indian Institutions

Following closely behind IISc, several Indian institutions have earned their place in the rankings, enhancing the nation's global academic reputation. The universities that have been recognized in the 501-600 band include Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences.   Furthermore, Aligarh Muslim University and Bharathiar University have both improved their positions, moving up from the 801-1000 band to the 601-800 band. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) and Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad have also made substantial progress, now being ranked among the world's top 800 universities after moving up from the 1001-1200 band to the 601-800 band.   A notable newcomer to the list is the Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, which has entered the rankings in the 601-800 band.

IITs and Their Boycott

However, it's worth noting that several top Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have chosen to boycott the rankings for the fourth consecutive year. These IITs, including Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee, have expressed concerns about the transparency and standards of the ranking system. Despite their absence, other Indian institutions have demonstrated India's growing prowess in higher education.
